Gmail is well known for being fantastic at battling spam. However, it can't defend against that sales rep who has got hold of your email address! They could be a genuine sender whose emails you want to receive.

Yesterday, Google added a new feature to Gmail that helps you defend your inbox from that overly aggressive sales rep flooding your inbox with email.

With two clicks you can permanently "block" a sender. While this does not actually stop the sender from emailing you. What it does rather, is place all emails from a blocked sender directly into spam. You can also unblock the sender from inside your spam folder if you have a change of heart.

To block a sender:

  • Open the email
  • Click the little down arrow next to the reply icon
  • Click "Block (Senders Name)"
