It only takes a single photo of your face for a stranger to become you. They can do it in real time during a live video call. The software to do this is completely free and openly available to anyone right now. This means you can no longer be absolutely sure the person on your screen is who they claim to be. It also means a scammer could easily impersonate you to your team or your clients. You might be wondering how to stop your face from being stolen in the first place. The annoying truth is that there is no technical way to prevent it. The only true prevention is having zero online presence, so scammers have no source material to scrape. Since you run a modern business, hiding under a digital rock is completely impractical. But there is no need to panic. We have a very simple, low-tech way to catch a high-tech scammer out. If you ever feel a bit suspicious about the person on the other end of a video call, ask them to do a quick test. Ask them to hold up three fingers. Get them to wave those fingers back and forth directly across their face. Watch the screen closely as they do this. Look for the image glitching or tearing when their hand blocks their features.
When fingers cross the face, the deepfake software gets confused and the visual illusion breaks. A real scammer will do whatever they can to avoid passing anything in front of their face.
