How to install Google Chat

You can access Google Chat by going to chat.google.com, but you can also install it on your computer so that you can access it at any time in its own window, rather than needing to leave the website open all the time.

To Install Google Chat on Windows or Mac:

  • Visit chat.google.com in Google Chrome.

  • Once the website has loaded you should see a banner offering you the option to Install Google Chat.

  • If you don’t get offered the option to install Google Chat then look for the + icon at the end of the address bar.

  • Click the + icon, and you will get an option to install Google Chat.

  • The app will install instantly and appear in its own window. 

  • A new Google Chat icon appear in your taskbar, right-click this icon to pin it to your taskbar. 

  • Now, whenever you want to access Google Chat, click the icon.

Install Google Chat on your mobile:

  • Open the app store on your phone.

  • Search for "Google Chat".

  • Install the app.

  • Open the app and sign in with your work email.

Turn OFF Google Chat in Gmail

Now you have Google Chat installed on your computer, you should turn off Google Chat in Gmail so you don’t get double notifications and free up some space.

  • Open Gmail

  • Go to settings

  • Under the “Chat and Meet” tab toggle Google Chat to Off.
