How to easily create a business data dashboard with Looker Data Studio

Looker Data Studio, previously known as Google Data Studio, is a service provided by Google which closely ties in and connects with the data you hold in Google Workspace and over 800 other services. Using Data Studio, you can build a dashboard showing you metrics across your business. Creating a dashboard is as simple as connecting your data sources and then dragging and dropping charts and tables to create your own branded dashboard that you can share with your team or stream to a screen.

An example of how we use Data Studio at Kimbley IT

It took us about 40 minutes to create the dashboard you can see, requiring no coding. We connected a Google Sheet that contained the live data to Data Studio, then dragged and dropped the elements we wanted to use to visualise the data.

After every contact with a subscriber, we record what took place, using a Google Form to save the captured information into a Google Sheet. This Google Sheet is then connected to Google Data Studio, allowing us to analyse the data quickly.

For example, some of the data we capture shows which method an end-user took to contact us. We are trying to get everyone to instant message through Google Chat, and Data Studio makes it easy for us to see how close we are getting to this goal.

We can see which client is taking up most of our time and then look deeper into the cause, showing that their team is struggling with one service and investing in training for their employees would be beneficial.

Data Studio makes it easy for us to see the spread between Assistance requests (where someone wants to know or get shown how to do something better) and Support requests (where something is not working as it should). Along with how long it took to resolve the question asked.

And because Data Studio is a Google productivity tool we could easily share and collaborate with others while we built our dashboard. Just as you do in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides.
