How to factory reset your Chromebook.

Chromebooks are reliable computers that rarely play up because of how Google designed the operating system. If something doesn't work as expected, you can simply factory reset your Chromebook, log back into the device, and continue where you left off.

Factory resetting your Chromebook may sound scary, and you might instantly think, what will happen to all my stuff if I factory reset my Chromebook?

Once the factory reset is complete, which will take around 20 seconds—yes, 20 seconds, not minutes—all your stuff will reappear as soon as you sign back into your Chromebook with your Google account.

Ensure all the files you want to keep are stored in your Google Drive, as some folders, such as Downloads, will be wiped during the factory reset.

The process to factory reset your Chromebook:

  • Sign out of your Chromebook.

  • On the login screen, press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R.

  • Select restart.

  • On the next screen that appears, select Powerwash, then Continue.

  • Once the Chromebook is factory reset, sign back into your Google account.

  • Your Done! Your Chromebook has now been reset.
