How to install the Google Workspace Gemini Edition on your Desktop and Mobile.

You've probably heard of ChatGPT; it's a well-known name in many households. However, like many popular brands, it's not the best option available. For several months, Gemini has been outperforming OpenAI's ChatGPT in nearly all the benchmarks used to evaluate AI performance.

Gemini has one distinct advantage over ChatGPT, Claude, and others: it is connected to your Google Workspace account. This means it has access to your emails, calendar, and files stored in Google Drive. As a result, Gemini can provide you with more thorough and personalised responses based on your information.

Gemini offers better privacy controls because it is included as part of your Google Workspace subscription. This means that it does not use the information you provide to train future models, so there’s no risk of your data becoming part of what it shares with others. In contrast, unless you are paying for a monthly subscription to ChatGPT or Claude, you won't receive the same level of privacy. Your chats on those platforms may be used to train future versions.

Installing Gemini on your Windows or Mac Desktop.

Image shows the menu option "Install page as app..."

To do this, you need to use a modern browser. For this example, I'm going to use Google Chrome because, let's be honest, that's what everyone uses.

  • Head over to gemini.google.com.

  • Once there, click the three dots in the top right of Chrome.

  • Select "Cast, save and share"

  • Select "Install page as app..."

  • A box will appear asking if you want to install, select Yes.

Gemini will now open in its own Chrome window on your desktop. If you check your taskbar (on Windows) or dock (on Mac), you will see a Gemini icon. To pin it for easy access, right-click the icon and select "Pin to taskbar" on Windows. On a Mac, simply drag the icon to your preferred location. Now you have Gemini installed and can access it quickly whenever you want!

Installing Gemini on your mobile.

The installation process on your mobile device is quite similar to that on your desktop.

Android Owners: If you are using an Android device, you will end up with two versions of Gemini. The version built into your Android phone is the consumer version, which activates when you press and hold the power button. The version we will be installing is the Google Workspace version of Gemini.

To get started, you need to have a work profile set up on your Android phone.

  1. Open Google Chrome within your work profile.

  2. Navigate to gemini.google.com.

  3. In Google Chrome, click on the three vertical dots to access the menu.

  4. Select the option "Add to Home Screen."

  5. Follow the prompts to install the app.

Once the installation is complete, you’ll find an icon for Gemini among your work profile apps. Just tap this icon whenever you want to use Google Workspace Gemini.
